Off the back of the OD505, Austrian Audio’s recently released live-oriented vocal microphone, comes a new pencil condenser microphone employing the manufacturer’s newly developed OCC7 capsule technology.
The CC8 is a small-diaphragm cardioid condenser microphone handcrafted in Vienna. Highly capable across both studio and stage applications, the CC8 has been designed to capture fast transients and accurate spatial information. From recording drum overheads in the studio, to capturing the subtleties of a live violin performance, the CC8 is well-suited to a variety of both classical and modern instruments. With a natural, open sound, the CC8 excels at recording dynamic sources- even at extreme volumes- without becoming harsh.
The unit’s slim design allows for tightly targeted positioning, even in challenging places, and thanks to the microphone’s built-in switchable attenuation (0 dB, -10 dB, and -20 dB) the CC8 can be positioned very close to loud sources without fear of distortion. With quieter sources, the CC8’s low self-noise ensures the nuances of each performance can be captured with world-class clarity and detail. The addition of a switchable high-pass filter at 60 Hz/120 Hz (2nd order) ensures that rumble and impact noise can also be eliminated.
The leading technology behind the CC8’s precision and transparency can be found in the microphone’s capsule: the OCC7. Inspired by the historic CK1, the OCC7 is Austrian Audio’s unique new small-diaphragm capsule system. The capsule’s three-micron-thick gold-coated Polyethylene Naphthalate diaphragm is much more robust than conventional Mylar alternatives. This capsule, in combination with a transformerless output, provides the CC8 with an exceptionally linear frequency response, and the ability to handle extremely high sound pressure levels of up to 156dB. With the system’s minuscule self-noise of only 16 dB(A), the CC8 is capable of capturing an exceptional dynamic range.
Before leaving the Austrian Audio production line, each microphone is measured and tuned in their special in-house anechoic chamber. Every CC8 is calibrated to a tolerance of max +/- 0.5 dB sensitivity at 1 kHz, meaning every unit can be match-paired with any other, regardless of production date.
A much-anticipated addition to their growing product line, the CC8 serves as yet another example of Austrian Audio’s technological prowess, as they continue to push the envelope of both studio and live audio.
