Following on from the release of Austrian Audio’s first instrument-focused microphone, the exceptional CC8 Cardioid Condenser, comes a new approach to instrument mic design. The OD5 Active Dynamic microphone is a Vienna-made instrument mic featuring a unique swivel joint and switchable High-Pass filter.
Directionality plays a major role in achieving a desirable instrument sound. Austrian Audio’s engineers have incorporated this fact into the design of the OD5, developing a suspension system for the outer capsule basket that enables a 220° rotation of the head. This rotation allows for precise alignment of the capsule to the sound source without the need to adjust or loosen the microphone stand.
The OD5’s swivel mechanism serves to eliminate common frustrations in microphone placement, such as struggling with tightening/loosening microphone stand nuts when only a small change in angle is required, or the loss of microphone position altogether when loosening.

Austrian Audio’s now well-established Open Acoustics technology has been incorporated into the OD5, with both the capsule suspension and microphone basket designed to avoid acoustic interference. The Open Acoustics approach also allows for sound from the rear to pass through to the inner capsule. This results in the formation of a highly accurate cardioid characteristic, which the manufacturer has dubbed ‘Linear Cardioid’. The end result of this design is a clean, natural and precise sound.
As with Austrian Audio’s OD505 vocal microphone, the OD5 is based around an Active Dynamic circuit design. This ensures long cable runs have no negative effect on the signal and enables the inclusion of onboard High-Pass filter features. The OD5 includes a switchable HPF featuring an 80 Hz and 120 Hz mode and a -10dB pad can also be toggled.

The OD5 is a versatile instrument microphone, perfectly suited for use on drums, guitar amplifiers as well as in front of wind instruments and a veritable plethora of other sound sources.
