Focal has unveiled the Utopia Main series, a new range of studio monitors designed to meet the standards of the most discerning audio professionals. The Utopia Main 112 (UM 112) and Utopia Main 212 (UM 212) incorporate innovative drivers, exceptional power, advanced functionality, and a meticulous design. With these models, the renowned French acoustic brand makes a remarkable entry into the field of main monitoring systems.
A Technological Triumph
The Utopia Main series marks a significant milestone for Focal’s Professional Audio division, which has been at the forefront of innovation since its establishment in 2002. With development commencing in 2017, the Utopia Main range is the result of over 40 years of research in driver technology and two decades of advancements in studio monitor design. These 3-way (UM 112) and 3.5-way (UM 212) monitors have been precisely engineered to deliver unrivalled performance, even at the highest SPL. Their advanced design ensures exceptional clarity and precision, ideal for reference recording, mixing, and mastering.

The ‘M’-Shaped Membrane: Audio Precision and Striking Realism
The series features an innovative ‘M’-shaped membrane design applied to both the 5″ midrange with a ‘W’-membrane and the 1.5″ Beryllium tweeter. This design enhances rigidity and significantly improves dynamic range and transparency. The 5″ midrange, engineered for perfect pistonic motion, offers a precise stereo image and a true “phantom” centre, ensuring a high level of accuracy across all audio tasks. Moreover, Focal’s Tuned Mass Damper® (TMD®) technology reduces intermodulation, achieving surgical precision in providing a precise stereo image.
The Beryllium tweeter, combined with the ‘M’-shaped membrane, delivers exceptional transient response while minimising listening fatigue. This is the first time TMD® technology has been applied to the high-frequency driver, reducing total harmonic distortion (THD) by half at 3kHz. The increased voice coil diameter of 25mm improves heat dissipation and reduces thermal compression. Additionally, a fully optimised rear acoustic environment featuring a wave guide and Infinite Acoustic Load® (IAL) design further elevates the tweeter’s performance.

Low-end Extension
The Utopia Main monitors are engineered to provide low-end precision, even at the highest SPL. Both the UM 112 and UM 212 models feature 13″ long-excursion subwoofers housed in robust enclosures, paired with expertly designed bass-reflex ports—one driver in the UM 112 and two drivers in the UM 212. These subwoofers use lightweight moving parts and soft suspension, delivering exceptional articulation and definition in the low frequencies. The cabinets are constructed with 30mm-thick MDF panels reinforced by a bracing network to eliminate warping, while quarter-wavelength resonance reduction systems ensure precise bass, while mitigating port noise.
A Unique Amplification System
Designed with soffit-mounting, the Utopia Main monitors incorporate a unique external amplification system. The patented Class H amplifiers in both models employ current-mode amplification, providing the most transparent and natural amplification possible for the drivers. This method allows for precise control over the force applied to the membrane, reducing unwanted artifacts typically introduced by traditional voltage-controlled amplification. The combination of current-mode amplification and analogue filtering results in the lowest THD measured in an anechoic chamber.

Monitors Approved by Professionals
The project was developed not only by Focal’s team of expert engineers but also with some of the most renowned audio professionals in the industry. The monitors underwent extensive testing in legendary studios across the globe, including several in the United States, with input from producers, mixers, and mastering engineers—many of whom boast over 70 Grammy Award nominations. Their feedback played a crucial role in refining the sound and features of the Utopia Main monitors, ensuring that the UM 112 and UM 212 set new benchmarks in the professional audio industry.
