NAMM 2026 saw Austrian Audio announce the OC-B6: the manufacturer’s first large-diaphragm condenser microphone purpose-built for bass drum applications. Featuring a newly developed CKR6-B capsule, the Viennese manufacturer has achieved what was long considered impractical- integrating a large-diaphragm capsule into a remarkably compact, rugged enclosure capable of withstanding extremely high sound pressure levels.
The OC-B6 is optimised to deliver a neutral and precise capture of bass drum sources, allowing engineers to shape tonal characteristics through instrument selection, microphone placement, and signal processing. Its stable performance across varied placement positions provides consistent results and expanded creative flexibility for both live and studio environments.
Austrian Audio describe the OC-B6 as a microphone that can ‘handle virtually unlimited maximum SPL’ – a characteristic unmatched by any other condenser microphone on the market. The “B” version of the CKR6 capsule achieves this by doubling the distance between diaphragm and electrode, and features a lower-tuned resonance frequency. The result is enormous headroom and a subtly refined frequency response.
With a design inspired by Austrian Audio’s OD5 and OC7 microphones, the OC-B6 features the manufacturer’s innovative Open Acoustic Technology, enabling top-tier performance in a compact form factor. As with the OD5 & OC7, the OC-B6 includes a swivel joint with 220° rotation for maximum flexibility and accuracy in capturing any style of bass drum.
The microphone features an optimised subsonic filter to eliminate acoustic content below 18 Hz, reducing infrasound that could otherwise limit available headroom in the mix. The OC-B6 excels both inside and outside the bass drum- whether placed just inches from the beater, near the resonant head, or positioned in front of the drum- the OC-B6 is built for outstanding sonic results. Additionally, a robust body with an integrated thread for direct attachment to mic stands, means that no mic clip is required.
