For PSI Audio, the 2013 release of their ground-breaking A25-M midfield studio monitor was a defining moment for the Swiss artisans. Dubbed ‘the most accurate 3-way studio monitor ever’, PSI Audio’s original edition impressed even the most disgruntled of sceptics. With its clean, powerful, and revealing output, the original design is still highly sought after among serious engineers.
2021 now marks the release of an updated A25-M; taking design cues from PSI Audio’s recently developed near-field system, the A-23-M, the new A25-M introduces a more powerful woofer engine, new flow guide and an entirely new midrange driver.
Developed in-house at PSI Audio, the Extended Dome Driver (EXD) is a unique synergy of cone and dome construction. Offering the advantages of both midrange driver types while eliminating the disadvantages, this custom combination allows the new A25-M to reach higher SPL levels with reduced distortion.
When used for midrange reproduction, dome drivers can often become unstable in the middle of the dome, or too heavy due to a more rigid material being used to overcome this. Cone drivers, on the other hand, with their membrane, dust cap, spider and suspension, pose larger weight complications which can limit SPL and increase distortion. These drivers also restrict airflow when used with heavy basket designs. Even the dust cap can add distortion to the final output.
The A25-M’s EXD driver avoids these issues by combining a 4-inch, latex-and-graphite-infused paper cone membrane with a light polypropylene dome, both of which are directly connected to the voice coil. With the weight ratio and dimensions of the coil and membranes optimised in this way, the new A25-M has been pushed even further towards perfect sound reproduction. The new EXD driver is built directly onto the A25-M’s rotatable baffle, meaning there is no basket and no restricted airflow. The rotatable baffle enables optimum dispersion for either vertical or horizontal speaker placement.
The new A25-M’s all-analogue flagship system delivers an impressive 122dB max SPL per pair, with the low end reaching down to a superb 28Hz. Combined with PSI Audio’s proprietary Class G/H amplifier technology, Adaptive Output Impedance and Compensated Phase Response mechanics, the new A25-M achieves a new golden standard in studio audio reproduction.
