Hi-X65: Professional Open-Back Over-Ear Headphones From Austrian Audio

Austrian Audio’s initial entry into the pro audio headphone market immediately put them on the board as ‘one to watch’ for innovation in critical listening technology. Making waves with the Hi-X55, Austrian Audio’s professional closed-back over-ear headphones have earned a special place in the hearts of engineers around the world. After the successful release of an on-ear version, the Hi-X50, Austrian Audio have now set their sights on an open-back version.

Hi-X65 professional headphones take true Vienna craftsmanship to the next level, delighting sound engineers and audiophiles alike. Designed as professional monitoring headphones for mixing and mastering, the open over-ear construction and high excursion drivers are designed to produce a clean, absolutely transparent sound.

Development of the Hi-X (High Excursion) technology first featured in the Hi-X55, and now the Hi-X65, was a result of combining today’s state-of-the-art technologies with decades of product development experience. All Hi-X headphones feature a ring magnet system and a 44 mm driver. This design caters to improved airflow and allows for the strongest magnetic field in its class. Combined with a copper-clad aluminum voice coil, the ring magnet reduces the weight of the membrane and the coil connected to it, allowing the membrane to move or change direction faster- providing a more responsive impulse reaction. This results in responsive low end imaging, superior low THD at low frequencies, a linear frequency response, and a precise ‘high-resolution’ sound that makes mixing and mastering a pleasure.

In addition to the astonishingly detailed sound, the new Hi-X65 is also designed with an exceptional level of comfort and an ‘optimal fit’ in mind. The ear pads are made of soft memory foam and have been completely redesigned to provide more space for the ears, without increasing the external dimensions.

The breathable construction serves to not only support the headphone’s acoustic design, but also ensures excellent ventilation. The soft memory foam padding of the headband has been designed with a clever recess for the head seam, significantly reducing contact pressure in that area. This optimal fit design allows for longer work time on large audio projects, without the wearer experiencing fatigue.

The Hi-X65 frame incorporates a sturdy folding system and includes a carry bag. All load-bearing and moving components are made of metal for maximum load capacity and durability. The headband and ear pads can be easily exchanged and replaced, ensuring levels of comfort and precision placement remain consistent over time.

Whether being used in the studio or for Hi-Fi enjoyment, the Hi-X65 adapts to any situation. Thanks to their 25 ohms impedance, the Hi-X65 headphones can be fed from a plethora of different input sources- allowing for the greatest possible power and headroom, regardless of where the sound source originates- be it reference AD converters, high-end headphone amplifiers, analog mixers, mobile players or notebooks.

The included exchangeable cables of 1.2 m and 3 m length are tailored to the technical subtleties of the headphones. They connect with the Hi-X65 with a secure locking mechanism. The standard 3.5 mm stereo jack offers the highest possible consumer compatibility, and an adapter to a ¼” stereo jack is included for pro audio connections.

The Hi-X65 combine innovation and durability to form a fantastic open-back complement the critically acclaimed Hi-X55 and Hi-X50 headphones, providing the listener with superior, high-precision sound.
